    WHAT IS IT?

Birth registration is the official recording of a child's birth by the Portuguese civil registry. It results in the issuance of a birth certificate, which is a vital document for obtaining a Citizen Card (Cartão de Cidadão), passport, and other legal identifications for your child.

    WHO CAN APPLY?

All children born in Portugal must be registered, regardless of the parents' nationality. Registration is mandatory and should be completed within 20 days of birth. Either parent can initiate the process, and it can be done online or in person

      STEP BY STEP GUIDE

      Online Registration

      Requirement documents:

      • Valid Digital Mobile Key (Chave Móvel Digital) or Citizen Card with authentication capabilities.

      • Marriage certificate:

      • If the parents are married, only one parent may complete the registration online.

      • If the parents are married and the marriage is already registered in Portugal, then you do not need to upload or submit a marriage certificate during the online birth registration. The system will automatically verify it.

      • If not married, both may be required to confirm the paternity acknowledgment.

      • If the marriage took place abroad and is not yet registered in Portugal, then you may:

      • Be required to register the marriage first with the Portuguese civil registry, or

      • Be asked to provide a valid foreign marriage certificate, potentially with an apostille/legalisation and translation if not in Portuguese.

      • Birth declaration issued by the hospital (Declaração de Nascimento)

      • Details of the baby, like name and place of birth

      Steps:

      • Access the ePortugal portal.

      • Authenticate using your Digital Mobile Key or Citizen Card.

      • Upload the required documents

      • Fill in the baby's name and details.

      • Submit the application.

Tip: Online registration is not available if the parents are not married and wish to establish paternity simultaneously. In such cases, in-person registration is necessary.

Can my child get Portuguese citizenship at birth?

Possibly, yes — if one parent has legally resided in Portugal for at least 1 year at the time of birth.

      • The registration process remains the same: online or at a registry office, but the legal outcome regarding citizenship may differ depending on your residency status.

      • The rules consider residence from the date of your application for a residence permit (not just from approval), which may help some families meet the 1-year minimum.

Yes always, but please be aware of the following:

      • If the parents are married, only one parent may complete the registration online.
